The end of the Irish Drift Series

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a safe and happy Christmas with your families.

As we closed the door on the challenges that 2020 brought for publicly attended events, we all prayed that 2021 would bring new hope. Sadly, Ireland, along with the rest of Europe, is now recording record numbers of Covid-19 cases and even with the roll out of a vaccine, Government officials have warned that large public gatherings will unlikely be possible for the majority of 2021.

In order to plan and organise a drift series, many financial outlays (insurance, venue deposits etc.) must be paid at the start of each year. As you can imagine, committing to these outlays as an individual, in these current times, presents a huge risk. With no clear guidance regarding spectator attendance or the availability of venues, creating a 2021 IDS calendar has also proved increasingly difficult. Sponsor investment and public ticket revenue are essential to making the series viable and without the guarantee of either, the writing was very much on the wall.

It is with massive regret and a heavy heart that I must announce that I will not be running any competitive drift events in the future. 2020 proved to be the most challenging season of Irish drifting, but with the help and support of my staff, the incredible fans, and our loyal sponsors, we managed to successfully hold one event despite every obstacle we faced.

As much I would love to take a gamble and invest my time, money, and energy in the future of Irish drifting, I am sadly not in a financial or personal position to do so.
I had high hopes and big ideas for IDS, but I always knew that everything would need to go smoothly in order for it to survive financially. I never, in my wildest dreams, would have predicted the impact Covid-19 would have, and certainly couldn’t have prepared for it.

I would like to thank everybody who supported my ill-fated attempt and appreciate the kind words I received throughout 2020. I guess It just wasn’t meant to be.
